ABOUT CIAS

CIAS intends to act as a catalyst for interdisciplinary artefact research and material culture studies carried out at Newcastle University.

In particular, it will provide:

  • A focus for developing collaborative and interdisciplinary artefact-based research projects
  • A platform for supporting postgraduate and post-doctoral research at Newcastle through specialist artefact expertise and analytical services
  • Expert consultancy in artefact identification, analysis and interpretation for museums, universities, heritage agencies and the commercial sector
  • A common platform for material culture experts and resources based at Newcastle University and in the wider region including the International Centre for Culture and Heritage Studies, the local branch of the Portable Antiquities Scheme and Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums
  • Advanced courses (Master Classes) in artefact analysis and interpretation led by world-class experts using the extensive collections held by the Great North Museum: Hancock
